Location: Poop Deck, 1272 The Strand, Hermosa Beach, CA
Experience: Let it be known, I would never poop at the Poop Deck. I did of course use the urinal. Which just happened to be my favorite variety, the trough. There was plenty of space to fit two comfortably and in a pinch a third could probably be squeezed in. Luckily I didn’t have to find out. It was old, but considering the venue it was fairly clean. The sink however was not, unusably filled with an assortment of cups, bottles, and paper towels. With the exception of the sink, and considering it was a dive bar, the trough at the Poop Deck was tolerable and got the job done.

Location: Gold Hill Inn, 401 Main Street, Gold Hill, CO
Experience: One word could describe this bathroom, OLD. Starting with the barn board door that locked with a trusty latch, to the overhead water closet styled toilet. Although it should be noted that there is nothing new about Gold Hill. Going there is like going back in time. Dirt Roads, dogs roaming about, and shacks that look like they were built during the gold rush. So the setup actually made sense and could even be considered slightly modern. The bathroom was small, hence the aerial perspective. The urinal seemed clean and fresh despite the lack of an operable flush knob. And even with the cramped nature of the space there was plenty of room to use the urinal comfortably. If you are ever in the Boulder area, I highly recommend a trip out to Gold Hill, it is experience you can’t fully appreciate until you see it for yourself.

Location: Em’s Artist Cafe, 2926 La Cienga Boulevard, Culver City, CA
Experience: I knew when I walked into the bathroom that this urinal was special. Positioned in a small alcove, framed with gold walls and ornate fleur de lis, it allowed for a private, comfortable, and truly pleasurable urinal experience. It very well may have been the holy grail of urinals.

Location: Bukowski Tavern, 50 Dalton Street, Boston, MA
Experience: Don’t be fooled by the double toilet setup, this is definitely a bathroom for one. It was dark dingy and small, much like the bar that houses it. While this may be a negative for a bathroom, it is not for a bar, as Bukowski’s is one of my favorites in Boston. Outside of the coziness the experience was fair, as the urinal was relatively clean and flushed well. The sink being the size of a small shoebox was suspect however, I question how many even bother with a hand wash with such a poor setup.

Location: Stadium Theater, 28 Monument Square, Woonsocket, RI
Experience: This urinal was used while performing groomsman duties at the first wedding ever held at the beautiful Stadium Theater in Woonsocket, RI. The neutral yellow color scheme made for a relaxed environment and the urinals extension out from the wall and bowl like features made for an easy target. It should also be noted that this bathroom provided a great recluse for the groomsman to share in the wisdom of Dr. McGillicuddy.

Experience: This was my first urinal I couldn’t use, and since it was the only urinal in the bathroom I used no urinal here.

Location: St. Julien Hotel & Spa, 900 Walnut Street, Boulder, CO
Experience: Another hotel bathroom. The St. Julien is high class. They pipe in soft, pleasant jazz which created a nice, relaxed atmosphere. Beautiful polished marble tile with dark wood accents. It almost felt too nice to urinate in this bathroom. Plenty of urinal availability with three options, two adult height, one child height. Functional and effective auto flush mechanisms. Possibly the nicest feature of this bathroom, the cloth towels they provide to dry your hands after washing. It was truly a luxury experience.

Location: Hotel Boulderado 2115 13th Street Boulder, CO
Experience: Similar to the trough, the floor urinal is one of my favorite types of urinals. Many men dislike it due to the ability to easily get urine/urinal water on your legs, pants or shoes. Personally I enjoy having a large target and not having to worry a whole lot about aiming. The automatic flush was the best I’ve witnessed, it was like watching a mini Niagara Falls gush down the porcelain. Additionally this was a beautiful bathroom, as the Hotel Boulderado is rather old, I am guessing it was recently renovated as it had a fairly modern design. The marble tile was an elegant touch and appreciated that it wasn’t overly polished. Based on my photo there appeared to be a heavy yellow hue to the lighting, this yellow saturation wasn’t nearly as apparent in person, the lighting was actually quite pleasant.

Location: Boulder Digital Works, 1011 Walnut Street Boulder, CO
Experience: Similar to the urinal at Barnes and Noble this urinal is rather low. Once again trying to cater to a wide audience as it is the only urinal in the bathroom. That being said this urinal is a pleasure to use. It is always immaculately clean and has properly functioning fixtures. I am thankful for these attributes as I use this urinal nearly everyday. It is also quite a spacious bathroom with plenty of elbow room and a nice pleasant beige color scheme.

Location: Sundown Saloon, 1136 Pearl Street, Boulder, CO
Experience: The Sundown Saloon aka “The Downer” aka “The Scumdowner.” This place is a Boulder institution. It is important to note the whole place is dirty and stinks of stale PBR with slightly sticky floors. There is also no door knob on the bathroom door and said door does not completely close. It only seems proper that they would have a trough. Many men despise the trough as they are uncomfortable with the lack of separation of personal space. I personally have no problem with it, and actually prefer them at sporting events. This particular night they had filled the trough with ice, which creates a fun game of “melt the ice” as you can see the game is far from over. Overall the bathroom is rather small and can fill up quickly when the place is busy, while it isn’t the best bathroom, I have seen worse.
